Prostate problems are painful and irritating and affect a man's mood and joy in life.  There are several causes to prostate conditions: over stimulation, bacterial, and benign malfunction, and prostate enlargement. Any of these conditions warrant a doctor's advice. Dealing with a long term sensitive prostate is daunting and takes some understanding.  Over activity can lead to irritation of the gland like any other organ or gland.  Rest, lots of water, and vitamin C can reduce irritation.  Bacterial infection can be caused by the malfunction of the prostate as in urine backing up into the prostate before or after sex. Relaxing on the toilet and allowing the prostate to relax and reduce its size allows the prostate to drain out trapped urine. This takes patience and drinking water accelerates the process.  Causes of urine being backed up into the prostate include: not relieving the bladder before sexual activity, or allowing the bladder to remain overfull for a period of time (such as a long car trip).

Relief of symptoms until you can be treated by a doctor include:

Taking Saw Palmetto capsules by mouth with water
Sitting in a tub of hot water
Massage of the prostate by "cageling" (flexing)

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), include frequent urination during the night, an inability to start urinating even when you have the urge, dribbling, a urine stream that is weak, and a bladder that does not empty fully. WARNING: These symptoms can also be the first warning signs of prostate cancer. If you experience these symptoms, you should see your doctor to get a rectal prostate examination and to test your prostate specific antigen level, which can also indicate cancer. Although the symptoms for BPH are the same for prostate cancer, having BPH does not raise your prostate cancer risk.
